TEFL/TESL Volunteer Organizations


There are many volunteer organizations worldwide that you can teach or learn English through. These organizations will provide training for those of you would like like to volunteer to help teach English or work in "Talk Time". Most of the volunteer organizations offer free English instructors to those who are seeking. Please check the requirements for participation on each of the websites. Generally there are no costs associated with joining these organizations and some will pay a nominal fee for your volunteer services. This list is frequently updated so be sure to check back!

America's Literacy Directory is a national database of literacy programs available via the Internet and the National Institute for Literacy's toll-free number. The ALD connects employers, learners, volunteers, social service providers, and others to current information about literacy programs in all 50 states and the U.S. territories.
AmeriCorps engages 50,000 Americans age 17 and older each year in intensive service to meet community needs in education, the environment, public safety, homeland security, and other areas. Members serve with national nonprofit organizations like Habitat for Humanity, the American Red Cross, and Teach for America, as well as with hundreds of smaller community organizations, both secular and faith-based.

Literacy Network Of Washington — or Literacy NOW — strengthens adult literacy services in Washington State. We connect learners with teachers; we promote effective instruction; and, we provide tools and training. USAFC is charged with building a culture of service, citizenship, and responsibility in America. USAFC promotes and expands volunteer service in America by partnering with national service programs, working to strengthen the non-profit sector, recognizing volunteers, and helping to connect individuals with volunteer opportunities.
VSO Canada is proud to be the Canadian partner of Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO). VSO is an international development agency that works through volunteers. They promote volunteering to fight global poverty, by supporting people to share skills, creativity and learning with communities around the world. Through personal commitment and practical action, volunteers help build a fairer world.
VSO is a leading development charity with almost 2,000 skilled professionals currently working in over 40 countries. They respond to requests from governments and community organizations throughout Asia and Africa. Their volunteers aim to pass on their expertise to local people so that when they return home their skills remain. Volunteers can be aged between 20 and 75 years old and must have a formal qualification and some work experience. Regular postings are for two years and volunteers are provided with accommodation and a local level allowance as well as air fares and insurance.
